What Does 3D Printing Cost in Canada? How Quotes Actually Work
The real cost drivers behind 3D printing quotes in Canada: material, machine time, labor, and finishing, and why per-part prices drop with quantity.
The most common question we get is also the hardest to answer in one line: what will my part cost? Every honest answer starts the same way, it depends, and then the conversation usually ends there. This post is the rest of that conversation. We will not quote prices here, because a price without your part attached would be fiction, but we can show you exactly what drives the number so a quote stops feeling like a black box.
The four things you are actually paying for
Material. Every quote starts with grams. The slicer tells us precisely how much filament or resin your part consumes, including the support structures that hold up overhangs and get thrown away afterward. Material grade matters as much as quantity: a part in standard PLA and the same part in a carbon fiber reinforced nylon can differ several times over in material cost alone. Dense infill, thick walls, and big solid parts push grams up quickly, which is why we sometimes suggest design changes that hollow a part out without weakening it where it matters.
Machine time. A printer that spends nine hours on your part is a printer that cannot spend those nine hours on anything else, so time on the machine is priced into every job. Layer height is the big lever: fine layers look better and take dramatically longer. Part height matters more than footprint, since every layer is another pass. When we quote two finish options at different prices, machine time is usually the difference you are seeing.
Labor. Files need checking and preparing, plates need loading, parts need removing, supports need stripping, and everything gets inspected before it ships. On small orders this setup work is a meaningful slice of the price. On production runs it fades into the background, which leads directly to the next section.
Finishing and packaging. Support removal is included in any sane quote, but extra steps cost extra: sanding, inserts, assembly of multi-piece products, custom packaging for white label work. If your part ships straight from our bench to your customer, the packing step is part of the price too.
Why the tenth part costs less than the first
Per-part price drops with quantity, and it is worth understanding why rather than taking it on faith.
Setup happens once. Checking your file, dialing in the print profile, and running a first article takes the same effort whether one part follows or a thousand, so that fixed cost spreads thinner as quantity grows.
Plates pack tighter. Printing eight parts on one plate uses machine time far more efficiently than printing one part eight times. Warm-up, cool-down, and changeover all happen per plate, not per part.
Tuned profiles compound. By the time a part has run a few batches, its profile is optimized, its failure modes are known, and its labor is routine. That reliability is priced in.
This is also why we encourage people to quote the quantity they actually expect to need rather than testing us with a single unit. The single-unit price tells you very little about the hundred-unit price.
What makes a quote come back higher than expected
A few honest patterns from the quoting bench. Very large single pieces cost more than people expect, because height drives hours. Very fine cosmetic finishes cost more than people expect, because fine layers multiply time. Engineering materials cost more than people expect, because the filament itself does. And parts designed for injection molding, with paper-thin walls or huge solid sections, often need small design adjustments before they price well as prints. None of this is a reason not to ask. It is a reason to send the real file and get a real number.
How to make your quote come back lower
A few things genuinely move the number, and they are all in your control before you hit send.
Tell us the real quantity. Setup amortizes across the whole run, so quoting ten when you need a hundred prices the job wrong in both directions.
Stay flexible on material unless the application decides it. If PETG does the job, insisting on a premium engineering filament buys nothing but cost.
Accept a standard layer height on parts nobody sees. Fine finishes belong on visible surfaces, and doubling print time for the inside of a bracket helps no one.
Mention the part’s job. Knowing a part is a one-week temporary fixture rather than a five-year product lets us quote lighter infill and cheaper material with a clear conscience.
None of these are tricks, they are just information, and information is what turns a conservative quote into a sharp one.
